If you’ve never visited the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the last Sunday in April is the perfect day to plan your first visit. Even if you’ve been here many times before, there’s plenty of reason to make a trip back. After all, that Sunday will be their 7th Annual Chocolate on the Bay Chocolate Festival!
The combination of a Maritime Museum and a chocolate festival may seem strange at first, until you realize that all chocolate in California was at one time brought here on boats. There is a definite overlap between seafaring history and the development of the chocolate-loving culture here in the United States. You can learn all about that history while enjoying some incredible samples of chocolate treats and dishes at this festival.
Delicious Treats and Fascinating Facts Abound
While San Diego is home to many special events and festivals, it is rare that an event offers a perfect cross-section of both educational opportunities and sweet treats.
That clever pairing, as well as the beautiful setting of the Maritime Museum, make this one annual event you don’t want to miss. There will be dozens of vendors showcasing incredible chocolate treats. There will also be cooking demonstrations, wine and beer pairings with delicious chocolates for adult attendees and even a scavenger hunt, which is sure to thrill younger people attending. There will also be dance performances from the Maritime Dancers aboard the ship the Berkeley at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m., which will provide exciting live entertainment while you sip and munch.
There will be demonstrations of clever kitchen tricks for cooking with chocolates that start at noon. You can also build your own chocolate pizza. There are surely going to be some samples that appeal to your sweet tooth, but supplies will be limited. Earlier arrivals will likely get the best selection of sweets.
