From Paris to North Park

Some restaurants can be stationed anywhere, and still be immensely popular, for simply their product. Loyal eaters will travel far and wide to satisfy their craving for a favorite spot. Some restaurants are defined by the area they exist in, becoming a staple of the area contributing to its identity, attraction and overall vibe. For the Smoking Goat, both of these are true.

With a comfy, woodsy, warm atmosphere, the Smoking Goat is an iconic part of the North Park neighborhood. Owner Fred attended Cordon Bleu in Paris, before bringing his passion to San Diego. He bought the space off of Craigslist in 2010, built out his vision, and opened The Smoking Goat in 2012. 6 years of incredible dishes, raving reviews and much success, we got a chance to  try the Smoking Goat for ourselves.

A Menu Crafted From The Best Quality Products

The Smoking Goat prides itself on using high-quality ingredients that together build incredible dishes. The Artic-Char, a fish similar to salmon or cod, is imported from Iceland. The Steak is from Kansas, the porkchops from Minnesota. Then, these meats come together to harmonize with some local produce grown right here in San Diego. The Chicken and Eggs come from a local farm as well,

Plates and Dishes You’ve Got To Try, from Appetizer to Dessert

If you’re stopping at Smoking Goat for a full meal, or just a quick bite, make sure to try the Crispy Octopus appetizer plate. A single tentacle is laid on a bed of wild arugula and drizzled with romesco, a spicy spanish sauce. It is crunchy and delectable, and comes with a side of fingerling potatoes.

A Pork Chop From A Happy Pig

As for a main course, we have three suggestions from this robust menu. You honestly can’t go wrong with any selection, but it would be a shame to miss out on the Compart Farms Duroc Pork Basquaise. If you’ve never heard of the Compart Farms Duroc, it is a breed of pig raised in an atmosphere ideal for producing incredible meat. Compart Duroc… “promises an all natural, mouthwatering, rich flavored pork with superior tenderness and natural juiciness. This type of pork has a higher percentage of intramuscular fat and a higher pH. The pork is marinated in a pepper basquaise, and is so tender it melts in your mouth. It is covered in a tasso ham compound butter, adding it’s flavor with savory fat.

Butternut Squash Ravioli

During the fall and winter, the butternut squash ravioli is a dish sure to put you in a seasonal mood. It’s handmade, filled with squash and seasoned with sage brown, and comes on a bed of shaved brussel sprouts and toasted pepitas. Each ravioli is filled with mashed sweet potato full of natural sweetness. The noodles themselves are fairly al dente, giving them a nice texture to contrast with the creamy inside. There are two size options for this dish, a smaller plate (which was a very fair portion) and a larger option for those who want to share, or are just really hungry. 


Treat Yourself at Happy Hour

If you’re looking to treat yourself at the end of a long day, Smoking Goat has an amazing happy hour, too. From 3PM – 6PM, Monday through Friday, stop by for a $4 draft beer or $5 house wine. Grab a bite with one of the $6 classic small plates, including macaroni & cheese with aged cheddar and breadcrumbs, or the handcut duckfat truffle fries.
